Project Details

Our goal when facilitating any #medialiteracy instruction is to de-emphasize learning video and editing skills and to EMPHASIZE learning how to communicate in a new language…The Language of Screens. Understanding how messages are being communicated to us through a screen, and then, how to use that same education to communicate our own messages, is essential learning in a world powered by devices, screens and media content. The Art of Storytelling is one of our community workshops that is designed to introduce essential concepts of documentary storytelling, media literacy, video production and video editing to students ages 12-to-80. This program seeks to provide participants with a basic understanding of screen language and the skills of shooting/editing video to learn to tell community-based stories. These workshops are offered as 3 day or 7 day programs at a minimum of 4 hours per session. Here’s a sneak peek into our April 2024 Sessions that we facilitated for the Blackville Community Development Corporation, the South Carolina Arts Commission Folklife Field School, all powered by the National Endowment for the Arts. We got busy! Enjoy!

Recap Video

OTR Media Group worked with our students this summer at Olympia Learning Center. The instruction was very thorough. Students learned about “media literacy” and how to read and write film. The curriculum provided step-by-step instruction that the students could easily follow.

Clips from other videos kept the students engaged and hands-on work with the camera made the sessions interactive and fun. They came away with a finished project that showed their knowledge and ability to produce a carefully planned production. The school was very pleased with the outcome of the students’ projects and the professionalism of the teacher.
