Project Details
In addition to our company being involved in several Gullah Geechee video projects and having several Gullah Geechee descendants on our staff, including our founder who was born and bred right here in South Carolina. We intentionally look for projects where we can offer knowledge and nuance that can really help visuals about Gullah Geechee communities be well rounded, have depth, and ultimately…look amazing.
Through our work with the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor and the National Park Service we were introduced to the team installing the new Gullah Geechee exhibit at the Fort Frederica National Monument in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The Gullah Geechee Ring Shout and the Sweetgrass Basket Making tradition are central to the African ancestral story of African American people. We wanted to visually place guests to the exhibit WITHIN the experience so they could feel song lyrics, rhythm and percussion. Guests also will have the opportunity to hear about the history of these cultural practices from the Gullah Geechee Ring Shouters and Sweetgrass Basket Makers like Gregory Grant.
Our ultimate goal was to create pieces that are pleasing to the eye, warm, intimate, engaging and informative. A special thank you to the design and installation team at Color Ad, the incredible staff at Fort Frederica and the National Park Service for letting us share in the creation of this project. And a very special thank you to The Historic Harrington School, First African Baptist Church, the Gullah Geechee Heritage Commission and the St. Simons Island Gullah Geechee community for being a part of this process.
