In one of America’s oldest states, modern Black artists use first-person film to redefine contemporary culture, revealing a future rooted in their past.
SYNOPSIS
In Development – Blaktastik is a short documentary series that explores how a new generation of Black artists is redefining contemporary culture in South Carolina. The films feature intimate, first-person portraits of creatives who are actively pushing against antiquated narratives and challenging what it means to be Black in one of America’s most storied states.
Shot on location in the artists’ personal and professional spaces, the series argues that Black South Carolina culture exists in the past, present, and future all at once. Blaktastik reveals the distinct dichotomies these artists face as they pursue their work and craft. It’s a compelling look at the pioneers who are not only changing their own lives but also reclaiming their identity and reshaping their state’s cultural landscape.
